0.25mm Thin Speaker Soon Become Reality

Imagine you hear some nice music but you absolutely has no idea where the sound comes from!

This ground breaking speaker technology has been developed by University of Warwick engineers which is less than 0.25mm thick. Its particular method of sound generation produces sound which clearer, crisper, and easier to hear.

The speaker is lightweight and inexpensive to manufacture. It could be concealed inside ceiling tiles or car interiors, or printed with a design and hung on the wall like a picture.
The project is pioneered by University of Warwick spin-out company, Warwick Audio Technologies. It is ideal for public spaces where it delivers planar directional sound waves, which project further than sound from conventional speakers.

Warwick Audio Technology’s FFL technology is a carefully designed assembly of thin, conducting and insulating, materials resulting in the development of a flexible laminate, which when excited by an electrical signal will vibrate and produce sound.

The speaker laminate operates as a perfect piston resonator. The entire diaphragm therefore radiates in phase, forming an area source. The wave front emitted by the vibrating surface is phase coherent, producing a plane wave with very high directivity and very accurate sound imaging.

The company is currently in negotiations with a number of commercial partners. The first commercial product is expected to be launched later this year.

Gold Bullion Wireless Mouse in Hand

This should appeal to superstitious Chinese and lovers of all things gold. A computer mouse which resembles a gold bullion is a revival of sorts since the first computer mice used to be brick-like gadgets which were cumbersome and non-user friendly. Naturally the Gold Bullion Wireless Mouse is by contrast high-tech and worth its weight in gold.

Measuring 10.5 x 6 x 4 cm, the mouse comes with all the standard features of a mouse - right and left click buttons, a scroll button, plug-in via a USB port, PC and Mac compatibility. Elegant and glittering, it resembles a gold bullion in all appearances and is definitely the mouse to show off to match that new mean machine. But it is not ergonomically designed and is not too kind on the wrist and hands due to its shape. For $34.68, this may be one of the most expensive mice but the cheapest gold bullion you can lay your hands on.

Apple’s Ipod and Iphone Potentially Equipped with 802.11n Chip

The recent iPhone 3.0 firmware beta distribution list indicates that the next generation Apple’s iPod or iPhone could be potentially powered by 802.11n chip, replacing conventional 802.11a/b/g protocols in current models for much better performance boost in terms of wireless access in Local Area Network. If you recall, Apple Inc is already utilizing Broadcom chip, BCM4325 that integrates both WiFi and Bluetooth technologies and the upgrade would bring in BCM4329 with enhanced 802.11n while still maintaining Bluetooth v2.1 and FM radio transmitter/receiver.

Typically, a battery powered device may suffer degraded battery life time when such a powerful wireless module is integrated that make it not truly portable. But the Broadcom chip is claimed to be able to maintain low power consumption while able to extend the throughput and range significantly for better mobility. Thanks to its advanced STBC (Space Time Block Coding) and sophisticated power management circuitry that able to extend its usage in mobile consumer electronics market.

No firm plan as of now but if the upgrade is true, it will definitely bring better value to consumer by able to hook up to wireless access point for desktop-like web browsing experience without relying on limited 3G cellular network speed.
