Monitoring that Opened Window to Protect our Children Against Sexual Crime

We teach our kids not to talk to talk to strangers or open the door to people they do not know. Yet, we leave a window wide open in our house. Every time, they use the Internet, they can be lured into talking to any number of strangers of diverse backgrounds, motives and moral outlook. More worryingly, these strangers can solicit our children via anonymous or deceitful identities.

Studies in US show that one in seven children receive sexual offers online when using their home PCs. Yet only 20 countries make owing or downloading child porno a crime. Child porno has also become uglier and more horrifying in recent years. Websites that portray naked children in suggestive poses are considered mild and meek. Instead online users get to view a bound and gagged two-year-old toddler being raped or sodomised, while crying out for the perpetrator to stop the abuse. In the Internet images shown, 92% expose genitalia and explicit sexual acts, 80% show penetration while 21% show rape, bondage or torture. Moreover, the abused children are getting younger: 86% of those abused are under 12 while almost 50% are between three to five. Online child porno is a lucrative business worth at least US$3 billion.

While education and awareness are important measures to fight the crime, technology is another useful tool. Although the Internet has opened up more avenues for child pornography to proliferate and be distributed, technology, likewise, can be used by law enforcement officers to track and detain sexual criminals. Microsoft’s Child Exploitation Tracking System or CETS can piece together information in the Net to profile and track sexual offenders. It works by searching, compiling, analysing, and linking databases. Besides, parents need to instill guidance and control their children’s Internet activities with the help of suitable software. Filter programs can scan websites for keywords that expose children to harmful activities. Free filter programs include Jusprog and ICRAplus while T-Online and AOL also provide filter systems for their users. However the use of codes and secret names by sexual predators and pedophiles has managed to elude the security web provided by these filters. Moderated chat rooms also ensure that anything keyed in by a child is first checked by a moderator before being revealed on screen though children particularly teenagers will resent this type of prying and monitoring. Parents can also set time-restricted accounts, subscribe to notification of blacklisted websites, or check the browser’s history after their children have used the Internet.

VIA VX855 Ultra Low Power Chipset

Intel Atom processor has been so successful especially in both netbook and embedded space. While some may have doubt about its performance especially when handling graphics and HD (High Definition) media video playback when pairing with its comparatively older technology companion SCH US15W chipset, VIA has actually come out with a next generation chipset, named as VX855 that is claimed to be able to handle full HD 1080p video playback without significantly increase the complexity of design for fanless application.

The new chipset is a successor of VX800 with lower TDP (Thermal Design Power) and smaller form factor. Measured at only 2.3 watt with dimension of 27mm X 27mm, it is integrated with both northbridge and southbridge functionality that allows board vendors to design with 2-chip solution optimized for space and thermal constraint applications. The chipset will be coupled with either older generation VIA’s Eden, C7 or even the latest Nano processor to ease up the whole platform migration effort. Impressively, VX855 with integrated graphics core is claimed to be able to handle intensive high bitrate 1080p Full HD media playback while also supporting Microsoft’s VMR (Video mixing renderer), Direct X 9.0 as well as hardware decode for various famous Codec such as H.264, MPEG-2/4, DivX and WMV9.

No pricing and availability yet, but the new solution from VIA Technologies is expected to able to capture some new design opportunities especially with the recent increase demand of embedded graphics and multimedia capabilities in netbook market.

Panasonic ultra-thin 54Z1 Plasma

It is always a predicament to choose between Plasma and LCD. Generally both the Plasma and LCD have inherent strengths and weaknesses. Plasma features better display quality whereas LCD is more cost effective. In view of the fact that the current consumer market is mainly driven by the cost factor, many manufacturers have substantially shied away from the Plasma market. Having said that, Panasonic is delightfully showing off its Plasma 54Z1 officially with its attractive price tag. Of course the Panasonic Plasma 54Z1 comes with some special features that encourage Panasonic to be so upbeat while everybody is pulling out of the Plasma business.

It comes with an RF remote unit which allows users to remotely control the display without having to point directly at the receiver. Users can change channels from other rooms, fast-forward through walls and adjust volume through the floor. Of course the image and sound quality are superb and satisfactory. The last thing is of course whether $6,000 is value for money to get this ultra slim device for your home.

Alto Notebook Stand - for Comfortable Computing

The small size of a laptop may feel great when you have to haul it through the airport, walking up and down the staircases, etc. Anyway, hunching over that petite PC for hours may lead to neck aches – or hand cramps from the compact. It can also be a bit hard on your eyes and back if it’s not set-up properly.

While most laptops can be connected to a docking station or bigger monitor, Logitech is now releasing another option for notebook owners, the Alto Notebook Stand ($100; Jan. 07). The Logitech Alto portable notebook stand lets you anchor a laptop at eye level and work more comfortably at a table or desk.

The Alto features a fold-out design that provides a full-size USB keyboard and a USB hub on one side, and an angled notebook stand on the other side — providing relief for your hands with the keyboard, and relief for your neck, eyes, and back with the stand. This notebook-stand also includes extra programmable keys for things like starting programs or controlling the computer’s volume. It folds up to be quite portable, making it great for travel.

The Alto flips open for instant use on almost any flat surface, and folds down to a compact size for easy transport and storage. Also, the keyboard folds up over the notebook when in the stand to free up space.

A USB port is required to connect the Alto to the laptop, but a small hub built into the stand provides three more USB 2.0 ports for use in connecting other devices.

It works with most Windows and Mac OS X laptops weighing less than 4kg. When not propping up your portable, the Alto folds down to about 22 x 43cm and less than 4cm thick. Then, unlike a desktop computer, it can be shoved out of sight.

Increase and Speed Up Slow FireWire 1394 Copy and Transfer in Windows XP SP2

If you’re using Microsoft Windows XP SP2 (Service Pack 2) and try to use 1394a or 1394b FireWire devices such as external hard drive, the performance of the FireWire devices are greatly decrease and not optimum. The slowness of FireWire devices especially obvious when you transfer, copy or backup your files and documents in your computer local drives to the FireWire connected external portal disk, or when you transfer and copy your photos from digital camera that uses FireWire connection.

Normally Firewire 400 and Firewire 800 devices and drives will operate in the range of 26 to 39 megabytes per second on file copy operations in which termed as S800 and S400 speed. However, if you install Windows XP SP2 or are using Windows XP SP2, the FireWire 1394b ports will be changed to S100 speed, instead of using S400 or S800 speed. So if you connect any connect a 1394a or 1394b FireWire 400 or 800 device and external hard disk to a 1394b port, the FireWire devices incorrectly run at S100 or about 100 megabits per second, which is the cause for the slow FireWire transfer rate.

The resolution to the issue is to install an update for Microsoft Windows XP SP2 KB885222. It’s a hotfix released by Microsoft and described in Knowledge Base article KB885222 that corrects this issue. After installing the patch, restart the computer for it to take effect.
If you add a host controller for a new 1394 device to your computer after installing the KB885222 hotfix, you must add or modify the SidSpeed entry in the Windows registry for the new 1394 host controller to 1 of the following value:

0 for S100 speed
1 for S200 speed
2 for S400 speed (default value)
3 for S400/S800 speed (Windows XP Service Pack 1 [SP1] value)
The steps and instructions to add or modify the SidSpeed registry value are listed on the KB885222 Knowledge Base article, with additional information to locate the FireWire controller information necessary to modify the registry value.

USB 3.0 Specification with 4.8Gbps Transfer Speed

You must be familiar with the USB (Universal Serial Bus) port that is easily available in any of PC platform nowadays. The usage of this interface are so common ranging from peripherals such as mouse, keyboard, thumb drive to more sophisticated devices such as Bluetooth, UWB (Ultra Wide Band) dongle, mobile phone charging and synchronization. Besides IEEE1394 FireWire, USB 2.0 host port is so far the most convenience and high speed wired port that is capable of supporting 480Mbps transfer speed. During the recent Intel Developer Forum, Intel has just announced the availability of USB 3.0 specification that will bring the transfer rate ten times faster that current USB 2.0 interface. The specification will be released in first half of year 2008.
The USB port is famous for its easy usage and common device compatibility. Its easy plug and play feature has made it a great choice for both developers and consumers. Almost all current electronics devices available in the market come with some kind of USB interfaces such as USB Series A or Mini-B interfaces. While maintaining this plug and play feature, USB 3.0 is capable to bring up the transfer bandwidth up to 4.8Gbps which is about ten times faster than current USB 2.0 standard. Even current highest speed IEEE 1394 FireWire is only able to reach maximum of 800Mbps transfer rate.

The USB 3.0 products are believed to be available in late 2009 or early 2010 for commercial use. Although not much application really needs that kind of bandwidth but some may predict that there will be new usage model that able to utilize this newly release specification in short future. The good thing is, it is backward compatible and hence there is no worry about your current USB 2.0 devices to be used in future PC platform.

HTC To Be Banned in Germany Due to Patent Infringement Issue

HTC has been very successful in launching many new smartphone series in various countries and Germany is one of the major potential countries that HTC intends to penetrate into. However, this round of time it may face some huge challenges especially after the recent patent violation suit loss to IPCom GMbH.

HTC was accused to have infringed the “100 series” patents owned by IPCom which was bought from Robert Bosch GmbH since 2006. The UMTS related patents are believed to have been used in most of the Windows Mobile smartphones developed by this Taiwanese company. If there is still no compromise and agreement being made between these two companies, HTC will have no choice but to stop selling all its UMTS capable mobile devices in Germany which include the current T-Mobile G1 and upcoming HTC Magic.

Meanwhile, Google who has been actively collaborating with HTC in designing Google Android based handsets is said to be affected as well in the lawsuit. Hopefully this will not stop these giant companies from expanding their new powerful handsets to other regions.

SuperTalent Unveiled Project X DDR3 Memory Modules

Can you guess what the item in the picture is? It looks like a high end PC module but you may not find it in current PC architecture in the market. That is true, it is a DDR3 memory module that boost up the PC performance significantly. With current core processor’s number and speed increase, memory module could be the bottleneck that slows down the whole PC performance. And with the introduction of even faster DDR3 replacing older memory architecture of DDR2 and SDRAM modules, SuperTalent hopes to stay on top of the line among its competitors in memory products.

The module, named as Project X, is currently one of the most advance and highest speed DDR3 module available in the market. There are two modules with speed of DDR3-1800 and DDR3-1600 that give consumers better choice for platform integration. The higher speed of DDR3-1800 has a latency specification of 7-6-6-18 whereas DDR3-1600 at 7-6-6-18 specification. Besides the high end technology being deployed, the module itself also comes with impressive aluminium heat sink outlook that helps to dissipate thermal heat effectively. As compared to DDR2 memory specification of 1.8V supply voltage, DDR3 features lower supply voltage of 1.5V that reduce the thermal heat and with such a nice passive cooling mechanism in place, even cooler enviroment the PC can operate in.

Although it may not usable or compatible with all the current platforms that utilize DDR-2, those enthusiasts should be able to find their ways to utilize it in upcoming platform for higher performance applications. Both DDR3-1800 and DDR3-1600 will be available in commercial market by next week at $599 and $549 respectively.

Kingston Showcased 24GB DDR3 ValueRAM with Intel i7 During CeBIT

Kingston Technology, the world’s largest memory manufacturer has just demonstrated a 24GB total ValueRAM DDR3 memory solution running on Gigabyte GA-EX58 UD5 platform during the recent CeBIT event held in Germany. These memory configurations are made possible with six separate modules with each having 4GB DDR3 memory on board. During the demonstration, the memory manufacturer showcased a VMware workstation running with nine VM clients simultaneously while still able to have ample memory left for smooth performance.

According to Mark Tekunoff, senior technology manager of Kingston Technology, each virtual machine was allocated with 2GB of memory space and they only utilized 21GB with still around 3GB left for other running applications. Powered by Intel 920 Core i7 CPU and further supported by NVIDIA graphics solution, the impressive performance will definitely exceed what is needed by real applications in both office and home environment.

As expected, the solution is not cheap at all. At a price of $2000 for all the DDR3 memory solution, it is too high to be affordable even for enterprise users with no real life usage requirement. Anyway, it is good as a marketing tool to attract media and users to continue push its next generation products to market space.
